Our Philosophy

Get inside the heart of tiata fahodzi and find out where we came from, what we are all about and where we’re going.

About us

tiata fahodzi produces theatre that is fearless for a Britain of today; rich with languages, races, cultures and identities.

We make theatre that looks around and looks forward, with a mission to tell contemporary stories in modern and innovative ways, celebrating characters and audiences defined not by their diversity, but by their humanity.

The company is at an exciting point in its history as it heads into its 25th anniversary, and we hope we can build on and shine a light on the ways in which it has contributed so much already to the British theatre landscape.

tiata fahdozi is an engine room for so many of the conversations that are currently being had about British African heritage identity, how to make the industry inside and out a more dynamic and inclusive place for everyone.

At tiata fahodzi, we make social change the sole driving force behind what we do.  When we use the word community, we don’t to mean the things happening outside of our buildings and theatre institutions, but instead we recognise we are part of a much bigger community, and that it is possible for all of us to be creatives, make work, enjoy culture, and fight for the arts.

We want to see an Arts and Cultural ecology in Britain where everyone feels invited and welcome to participate. A culture where all experiences – including the contemporary British African heritage experience is celebrated, and we see ourselves in our full complexity and joy.

"...gorgeous theatre from a truly diverse company."

Sir Lenny Henry CBE

Our Mission

We will play our part in generating a richer, more multiple mainstream theatre culture by championing stories that illuminate the mixed, multiple experience of what it is to be of African heritage in Britain today so that – in our contemporary, changing society – the African diaspora experience provides a lens for us all to see our lives.

Our work so far

In April 2021, playwright, screenwriter, poet and Director, Chinonyerem Odimba became tiata fahodzi’s new Artistic Director. Chinonyerem feels strongly that it’s at an exciting point in the company’s history – one that we hope we can build on by celebrating and shining a light on the ways in which it has already contributed and helped to shape the sector.

And now is the time to recognise we are part of a community much bigger than us, and that it is possible for all of us to be creatives, make work, enjoy culture, and fight for the arts.

Chinonyerem’s vision for tiata fahodzi and the pioneering ways it supports British-African heritage artists is driven by a deep need and understanding to balance both the Artistic imperative and the political/social imperative of the company. One feels impossible without the other.
